Bed, bath and beyond...
Categories: Bathrooms

There's a growing trend for baths in bedrooms, believe it or not. Inspired by sumptuous suites in hotels, the deconstructed ensuite is growing ever popular, with more and more people looking to recreate the luxurious vibe at home. Think about it: a gorgeous bubble bath surrounded by soft lighting and not a loo in sight. It can be a dramatic focal point in your bedroom, giving it a real 5* vibe. It's also great if your ensuite is a bit on the small side, but you really don't want to sacrifice a lovely full sized statement bath. But before you take the plunge and go for a more free range bathing experience, here's some food for thought before putting in the feature.

1. Be practical...

How often do you bath? Are you more likely to sit back and soak amongst the bubbles or do you think you'd end up using a bath in your bedroom as as a giant laundry basket? The  notion of a freestanding bath in your bedroom might be super romantic and appeal to the free spirited, more exhibitionist side of you. But if your life is hectic, your room is more cluttered than chic, sticking a bath in it could add more chaos than calm to the mix. If you're tidy and minimalist and are sure to keep it for baths only, that's another story. But be honest - will you make the most of it?

2. Flooring...

What kind of flooring do you have in your bedroom? Plonking a bath down on top of your carpet, especially if your kids will be using it, is not a good idea. Soggy floors anyone? Most bedrooms have either carpeting or wooden flooring, neither of which are ideal when mixed with water. Ideally, you should have tiles or engineered wood suitable for bathrooms under your bath. You could even have two separate flooring options - tile the 'wet' area around your bath and have your regular flooring in the rest of the room. Or why not consider tiling your entire bedroom in wood-effect tiles? It's a fab solution, especially if you have underfloor heating.

3. Ventilation...

More than likely, your bathroom will be well equipped to handle conditions such as hot steam, humidity and moisture. Your bedroom might not necessarily have the proper systems in place. If you're getting hot and steamy in the bedroom when filling your bath, you need to make sure that there's an adequate fresh air supply getting in. Open a window, perhaps. Make sure your paint near the bath is washable.

4. Regulations...

There are strict regulations about having water near electricity supply - so if your bath is going too near your light switches or any plug sockets, you may have a problem. Talk to your plumber. Find out what you are and aren't allowed to do according to building regulations and make sure you follow their advice. Water and electricity definitely don't mix and safety must always come first.
